Finding the One That Stands Out

It’s curious, the things I notice while out shooting. It seems no matter where I am or what I set out to shoot, my eye always seems to land on a flower. There’s something fascinating about them that I can’t quite ignore.

This fascination gets stronger as I take a closer look. I can be looking at a whole garden or arrangement of the same type of flower, and from a distance, they all might look the same. But the closer I look, the more I begin to see their individual differences. No two are alike. One might have a slightly different shape, another a deeper color, and one might be posing just perfectly to catch the light or even better yet, my attention. It reminds me a bit of looking at a crowd of people. Each person is a unique being with their own history, perspective, and purpose.

That’s why I’ve developed a bit of a ritual when I am out shooting. Typically, no matter where or what I’m out shooting, whether it’s a cityscape or a specific event, I almost always end up taking at least one photo of a random flower, usually the one that I find the most compelling and captivating. It’s my way of finding the one that stands out, the one with its own unique character in the middle of all the others.
